Despite the restrictions construction has faced during 2020, that hasn’t stopped the industry from continuing to deliver a series of impressive projects throughout the year.
Whether it has been lifting equipment onto skyscrapers via helicopter, or installing a 900-tonne bridge in less than an hour, construction firms have proven their ingenuity and resilience this year.

1) O’Rourke and Murphy install 914t HS2 bridge in 45 minutes:
A joint venture between Laing O’Rourke and Murphy installed a 45m, 914-tonne modular bridge for HS2 in just 45 minutes in October.
2) Overbury enlists helicopter for signage lift
In an usual operation, fit-out contractor Overbury took to the skies, using a helicopter to lift thousands of kilograms worth of equipment into place on the 19th floor of a Birmingham skyscraper.
3) 8,000t cantilever hoisted into place
In Dubai, an 8,000t tonne, 227m-long cantilever whose structural steel weighs more than the iron in the Eiffel Tower, was lifted into place to join together two towers.
4) BAM builds £51m British Antarctic Survey wharfs
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) offered a behind-the-scenes look at how BAM built two new wharfs at two separate locations in the Antarctic.
5) Balfour-Vinci defy covid with huge M4 bridge lift
Balfour Beatty Vinci lifted three spans making up a bridge on the new M4 smart motorway into place in May, staying on schedule despite the coronavirus lockdown.
