The first entries to this year’s Art of Building photography competition were uploaded to the CIOB’s website yesterday — the day the competition opened for entries.
The competition is an international showcase for the very best digital photography of the built environment. It is open to both professional and amateur photographers, who have until 21 November to upload their entries.
This year, a new category for mobile and tablet photographers has been announced alongside four others: Building Inspiration, Between People and Buildings, Creative Visions and Young Photographer of the Year.
“You don’t need a fancy camera to be able to capture something inspiring. Our new mobile photography category is for those impromptu moments that happen in everyday life. It will be interesting to see if smartphone and tablet photography can give the DSLRs a run for their money,” says Art of Building manager Saul Townsend.
The competition is run by the CIOB and celebrates the creativity of the industry, the passion of the people who work within it, and the impact that completed construction projects have on people. This year’s competition has a £3,000 cash prize on offer for the overall winner.
The competition is free to enter and open to both professional and amateur photographers above the age of 18, living anywhere in the world. Entrants can submit up to three photographs across any of the categories.
A panel of industry judges will be responsible for shortlisting 12 finalists, which will go forward to a public online vote. This will run from 9 December to 9 January, with the winner announced on 5 February.
The CIOB’s website offers the following category guidelines for entrants:
- Building Inspiration is for images that focus on the architecture of buildings and showcase the design of a building, encompassing anything from an individual element to an entire cityscape.
- The Between People and Buildings category explores the relationship people have with the built environment. Entries capture a public or industry perspective of the interaction between people and buildings.
- Creative Visions allows photographers to find a unique and sometimes abstract perspective of the urban world around us.
- The category for Smartphone / Tablet photography is aimed at photographers on the move who can eke out every ounce of creativity their smartphone or tablet has to offer.
- The Young Photographer of the Year category is aimed at anyone between 18 and 25 and who might be starting out on a career in photography, or an amateur enthusiast.
Images must be between 2MB and 8MB jpeg files. Digital enhancements or alterations are permissable, but entries should not have borders or locks.
