Firefighters have called for the recommendations from the Grenfell Tower Inquiry to be implemented “quickly and efficiently” in an open letter to the government and fire chiefs.
The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called for a forum of all those needed to drive “sweeping changes” to UK fire safety.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack has written to the government and shadow cabinet, the London Fire Brigade, National Fire Chiefs Council, mayor of London, the Local Government Association, the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, fire safety bodies and the Grenfell community.
Wrack called on firefighters, tenants, government and fire safety and housing specialists to work together to ensure “the lessons to be learned from this first phase of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry are put into practice”.
He said the forum should include fire safety specialists, representatives from central and local government, housing specialists, tenants’ organisations and other relevant organisations.
He added: "The Grenfell Tower fire should be a turning point in fire safety across the UK. All relevant parties should be represented to ensure the recommendations are realised. We wish to ensure that the lessons to be learned from this first phase of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry are put into practice and set a precedent for action on the recommendations that will be made in Phase 2."
A report from the first phase of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, led by retired high court judge Sir Martin Moore-Bick, was published at the end of October. It set out in detail what happened on the night of 14 June 2017 at Grenfell Tower. The fire caused the deaths of 72 people.
The second phase of the inquiry is due to start early next year.
