  1. How about overseas study?

  2. Rick lee is asking student, like myself to get site experience. how can we when construction companies do not even respond to work experience letter or emails.

Turning up on site and asking the site manager doesn’t work either, believe me I’ve tried as the respond i get is “health and safety sorry” even when i said i will provide my own PPE.

How are students meant get on the graduate/trainee schemes when employers are looking for work experience which they them self refuse to provide?

  3. I am 21 years old and have recently managed to break into the industry as an apprentice site manager. After finishing my A levels, several times I looked into studying for a degree but even a few years ago this was too expensive for me, even if I was to live at home.

However, I managed to get onto a foundation degree course at my local college, valided by Kent uni, which took 2 years part time. This was a much cheaper alternative that allowed me to work at the same time. My tutors were also very helpful in finding contacts for me to find jobs or work experience.

It took me 2 years to find the job that I am in now, and that was thanks to a housing association scheme, which stipulated as part of its conditions that apprentices had to be taken on. I am also lucky that my employer is paying for me to complete a degree, as they receive funding for this.

It’s a difficult time, even to just find unpaid work experience, but networking and finding contacts, such as websites like Linked In, all help. I feel that in this industry, hands on experience is usually much more valuable than a degree, which is all theory. It is also much easier to learn when you’re working, rather than sitting in a lecture.

  4. I funded my plumbing course my self through college and gained 6 yrs experience in all construction sectors.

I then funded my self through university BSc in Construction Management. I have filled in numerous graduate applications and i can’t even get an interview. I thought potential construction companies were looking for degree students with experience, but it seems not. Im £31,000 in debt with no future potential for employment. What should i do, what more can i do ?
