The 42-storey ‘Cucumber’ tower and a cluster of other high-rise buildings in London’s Paddington basin have been given the go-ahead by planners.
Developers European Land and Property had already won permission for the 42-storey mixed-use tower, known as 1 Merchant Square, in 2011. While the building is set to remain the same externally, it will now contain more homes at the expense of a smaller-than-originally-planned hotel element. It will feature a two-storey sky bar at the top.

Meanwhile an adjacent building, 6 Merchant Square, was increased in height from the 15 storeys originally proposed to 21 storeys above three basement levels.

Together, the buildings, designed by Apt, will offer 426 residential units, including 67 affordable housing units in 6 Merchant Square.
A planning sub committee report for the City of Westminster, published earlier this week, recommended that the changes be approved. However, the project will still need final approval from Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
