The CIOB’s president Peter Jacobs and chief executive Chris Blythe are on a two-week visit to the USA and Canada to promote chartered membership and develop Institute activity in the region.
Arriving in New York on 12 May for a two-week programme, the visit to the Americas is part of the CIOB’s strategic plan which will enable the Institute to play a major role in supporting the construction industry, and professionalism in the region.
Highlights of the visit include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the New York Building Congress, a coalition of organisations representing business, labour and government organisations promoting the design, construction, and real estate industry in New York.
The MOU commits both organisations to exploring opportunities for increased collaboration with education and professional bodies throughout the region.
"The Americas represent a major opportunity for growth in our activities as an Institute. The visit emphasises our continued commitment to the region."
Amy Gough, CIOB
The CIOB has also pledged to work closely with the American Council for Construction Education, which accredits construction programmes offered by colleges and universities in the US.
Amy Gough, head of global branch operations at the CIOB, said: “The Americas represent a major opportunity for growth in our activities as an Institute. Since launching an office in the region, we’ve witnessed a growth in demand for professional qualifications, particularly in our new internationally recognised Chartered Construction Manager descriptor.
“The visit emphasises our continued commitment to the region and we are keen to align ourselves with local organisations such as the American Council for Construction Education and the New York Building Congress to share best practice and deliver high quality CPD and training.”
The visit began with CIOB past president Roger Flanagan delivering a keynote address at the ENR+Dodge Global Construction Summit in New York in which he discussed global construction trends.
The CIOB currently has more than 400 members in the Americas, which cover the USA, Canada, Caribbean and South and Central America. Further information is available at: www.ciob.org/near-you/americas.
The North American construction market is forecast to grow by up to 40% by 2025. CM’s sister website www.globalconreview.com has reported that US construction employment is currently at its highest level since the financial meltdown of 2008-09, leading to an urgent warning of a skills crunch.
Construction employment totalled six million in the US in April, a gain of 189,000 or 3.3% from a year earlier.

There is no comment or reference to CMAA (Construction Management Association of America) whose website states …..
North America’s only organization dedicated exclusively to the interests of professional Construction and Program Management.
And whose members carry the badge Certified Construction Manager (CCM) – there was talk about some sharing information but all has gone very quiet. They have 11,000 CCM which is alot more than the 400 CIOBs me included.
