The CIOB has launched an Artificial Intelligence Playbook setting out why the technology is important to construction and how it can create opportunities for the sector.

The playbook covers a huge range of potential areas where AI could be used, including leveraging workflows, as well as its impact on contracts and mitigating risks. It has been written by members of CIOB’s digital & innovation advisory panel.

The resource also considers how to mindfully navigate the technology, and the ethical and safety implications.

While it can do extraordinary things, it’s not always clear how AI systems make decisions. The playbook suggests a “white box approach” providing transparency, offering context, and an understanding of influencing variables.

Also covered are machine and deep learning; the relationship between AI and digital twins; the law and contracts; fundamentals; foundations of quality data; and practical implementation.

CIOB chief executive Caroline Gumble said: “It is highly likely AI could be deployed to have a positive impact in the short-term on both the skills gap and the need to drive improvements in sustainability, using digital tools to push our industry forward in much-needed ways.

“There are many areas where AI could become an integral part of the process. What AI could do for the design and planning of our buildings, towns and open spaces could be transformative.”

She added: “It is my hope the CIOB Artificial Intelligence Playbook will go a long way towards helping construction professionals understand AI in the context of our sector.”
