Barratt has entered a joint venture with the government’s housing agency, Homes England, to build multiple developments of 1,000 to 10,000 homes.
The long-term arrangement, called MADE Partnership, will act as master developer for the sites across the country.
A master developer is responsible for overseeing and managing the development of large-scale projects and coordinating the stakeholders involved.
MADE Partnership also includes Lloyds Banking Group and has been initially backed by equity funding of up to £150m.
Homes England said potential opportunities will include large brownfield developments, extending existing towns, as well as new garden village-style communities.
A ‘landmark’ partnership
Housing and planning minister Matthew Pennycook said that “landmark” partnership will help the government “ramp up” housing supply.
He said: “A failure to ensure the development system is working properly has held back the delivery of tens of thousands of new homes over recent years. This government will work in partnership with all those who are focused on turning things around.”
Barratt Development’s chief executive, David Thomas, added: “We are committed to playing our part in delivering the millions of new homes the country needs over the next 10-20 years. To help us achieve this goal, we need to deliver more large developments.
“Through MADE Partnership, we are creating a master developer which can manage the infrastructure and placemaking that is needed to deliver at scale, while consistently achieving the high quality and sustainability standards that Barratt is known for.”

As the traumatised owner of a David Wilson (part of Barratt Homes) new build house. I hope that the partnership stakeholders employ a diligent and robust QA process for these homes.
