BAM has supplied its workers with so-called ‘emu hands’ to help them avoid touching high-contact areas on sites.
As part of the contractor’s ongoing efforts to limit the spread of coronavirus, workers on some BAM Construct sites have been provided with silicone oven mitts. They have earned their odd nickname thanks to the resemblance to the mouth of an emu.
Each individual worker is provided with ‘emu hands’ to allow them to open doors and cupboards in canteens, open the fridge, use the microwave, turn taps on and off and use photocopiers.
The hands are then cleaned overnight either by hand washing or in the dishwasher.
BAM said the measure was kinder to hands than continual washing and sanitising and also reduces the waste of water and paper towels.
