Balfour installs ‘superspan’ gantry on M25

Balfour Beatty has installed 72 concrete beams which will form the second of the M25’s new Junction 10 gyratory bridges and lifted two gantries into place.

One 45m ‘superspan’ gantry spans the entire width of the M25 carriageway.

National Highways reopened the M25 on Sunday (14 July) seven hours ahead of schedule after Balfour completed the last stage of improvement works at Junction 10.

The M25 between Junction 10 and 11 was closed for more than 48 hours over the weekend to allow the works to take place. It is the third closure of the busy motorway since the start of the year.

Junction 10, a few miles north of Guildford in Surrey, is undergoing a three-year project to reduce the motorway’s congestion.

The scheme involved the demolition of Clearmount Bridge during the weekend closure. The operation produced 3,000 tonnes of material, which took 80 trucks more than 24 hours to clear.

Balfour is now working on the construction of the next modular bridge, which will take place offsite. The bridge will then be wheeled into place on a self-propelled modular transporter later in the year.

The Junction 10 project is due for completion next summer.
