Two brick balconies have collapsed at a residential block of flats in Hove crushing a car parked underneath them.
No injuries were reported.
A second-floor flat balcony collapsed on the balcony below and onto the ground, with debris falling on the car.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said in a statement that crews cordoned off the area before handing the incident over to the managing agents for the property.
It said: “Joint Fire Control was called at 12.57 [on Saturday 9 December] to Prince of Wales Court in Hove following reports that balconies had fallen into a front garden and onto a car. There are no reports of injuries.”
According to local historian Judy Middleton, Prince of Wales Court was developed by Croudace Homes in the late 1980s. Although the property was described as a “prestigious development of sea-front apartments with a uniformed porter on duty at the reception foyer”, only a third of the 17 luxury flats had been sold by October 1990. The developers decided to make substantial reductions in the price, which resulted in more apartments being sold.
The block is the former home of the late Only Fools and Horses writer and producer John Sullivan OBE, who lived and wrote many episodes of the popular sitcom there between 1991 and his death in 2011. A blue plaque commemorating his life was unveiled in 2022.
