Males make up 88% of starters of all new construction apprenticeships, according to the latest government figures.
The figures, published yesterday, showed that construction enjoyed one of the largest increases in its share of total apprenticeship starts of any sector during the 2016/17 academic year, as compared to 2012/13.
The total number of apprenticeship starts in the sector in 2016/17 was 31,610. That was down slightly from the year before, when there were 31,710, but up by 43% on 2012/13 when there were 22,070.
Construction accounted for 7% of all apprenticeship starts in 2016/17 (the largest share was held by health and social work, at 27%). Its share of apprenticeship starts in 2012/13 was 4.9%.
Meanwhile, in 2016/17, 46% of apprenticeship starts were with large employers, those with 250 or more employees.
Nonetheless, there was disappointment that more women were not choosing to take up construction apprenticeships.
Karen Jones, HR director at Redrow and a non-executive director of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) said: “It is very promising to see the construction industry lead the way in the number apprenticeship starts in the last academic year. However, today’s data also shows that 88% of construction starts were male. With Brexit sharpening concerns that the construction skills shortage will deepen, it is more important than ever that we reach out to young people of both genders, and ensure they are educated in the different career paths that construction can offer. Our most recent Apprenticeships report revealed that just over half (56%) of young women had received careers advice on apprenticeships, compared to 70% of young men. It vital that schools help break the gender stereotype and show that construction offers a rewarding career path to those from both sexes.
“Today’s data also clearly demonstrates that larger employers still have an advantage over SME’s when it comes to taking on apprentices. Hopefully, Philip Hammond’s move earlier this month to allow large employers to transfer a quarter of their apprenticeship levy funds to smaller businesses will go some way to alleviate this.
“Successive governments have however made great progress in the content and funding of apprenticeships. Going forward, there is room for improvement which can be achieved through greater collaboration across business leaders and government, and a more employer-friendly approach to the government’s levy.”

I wonder what the male starting rate in the areas of nursing, teaching, law, veterinary science and medicine was?
Given the long work hours and mostly working on sites away from home, that isn’t so surprising!
There are many careers, including some very prestigious careers, where most entrants are female. When did you last read a report suggesting that any such case was a problem?
If women got half the jobs in all the fields where they are currently a minority, as well as retaining their current share in fields where they are in the majority, what would the male unemployment rate be?
A world which is fair to individuals does not require all opportunities to be allocated between different groups of people in exact proportions to their numbers. The fallacious idea that it does is illogical, unethical, and is doing mounting harm to society. Different groups of people are, well, different, and if they are left to make free choices, as they should be, they will, on average, and with many individual exceptions, which aren’t a problem, make different decisions. Many of the career choices that women more often prefer, such as medicine and nursing, are commendable.
