The total value of BIM-mandated public sector work in the UK totals £160bn, out of a total pipeline of £600bn.
Speaking to an audience at the Digital Construction Summit, organised by Construction Manager and BIM+, Alex Lubbock, head of digital construction at the Infrastructure & Projects Authority, said the figure ought to give contractors and clients confidence to invest and continue along the digital journey.
“In the trenches of project delivery today, we are not always getting this right as a client but we are maturing and we are asking for more and more BIM,” Lubbock said.
He added that the challenge for the government and industry was to start doing BIM by default. “Give the customer what they are asking for and we will work on making sure that the customer is asking the right question.
“This should not be a cost extra. If they start asking for the world beyond that standard response then that is a paid-for service but let’s make that clear and be clear about what we are offering,” Lubbock urged.
